Algeria was an ancient kingdom called Numidia and its people were the Numidians. The kingdom of Numidia had early relations with the Carthaginians, Romans and Ancient Greeks, the region was considered a fertile area, and the Numidians were known for their fine cavalry. Olive trees were introduced by most of the visitors.

Some of the varieties catalogued are chemal for oil and these have oil and/or table olive use azeradj, blanquette de guelma, limli, sigoise.
