The Portuguese tend to like their oil slightly “fusty” and this gives a very rustic character to the oil which is not generally accepted in the rest of Europe.  However, some producers are producing really fresh oils which are as good as any made elsewhere.  The styles vary but tend to be on the sweeter side with

 fruity and herby flavours. Regions worth looking out for are Tras-os-Montes, Ribentejo and Alentejo.
